Frostbite # 5 Race Results
Published on 2/10/2019
WCSC held the 5th Frostbite Race of the 2019 season on Saturday, 9 Feb. Patrick Hopp volunteered to serve as PRO. Skippers and crews of six boats attended the brief competitor's meeting held in the Clubhouse at 11:00. Weather conditions were about 7-10 knots of ENE wind, cloudy sky, and a temperature near 50. With this in mind, and that the Club's Annual Banquet was to start at 18:00, the skippers chose to race Club Distance Course "E". This course starts at buoy S 20, goes as far as S 6, and finishes back at S 20, a total distance of 7.4 miles.
With the breeze from the ENE, the start was a broad reach. The 'slow' boat (handicap, not skipper's ability) was Windlass, a Hunter 27 skippered by Kirk Brutosky. He started first. The 'fast' boat (again, handicap, not skipper's ability) was Jus' Chillin', a Capri 30 helmed by Cyril Guerin. This boat was the last to be allowed to start. One of the intermediate boats attempted to start under spinnaker (cool!), but arrived at the start line early. Rather than cross the line too early, the skipper chose to turn back upwind, tack, and sail away from the line (not as cool). As you know, this is not in line with the usual handling of a spinnaker. However, the skipper was subsequently able to jibe the boat (and conflicted red and silver spinnaker) and execute a proper start.
All boats were able to complete the course in time to attend the Annual Banquet. The next, and final race of the 2019 Frostbite Series, the Bud Lite Cup, will be held on 23 Feb. Details can be found elsewhere on the website.
