May 12 Centerboard Fleet results and write up

Published on 5/14/2018

Congratulations to John Kreidler, Scott Griffin and Ronnie Ashmore for their bullets this past Saturday.

The Centerboard fleet held 3 races and a planned steak cookout (‘Steak on the Lake’) this past Saturday. It was well attended with 9 boats on the line and 26 persons chowing down on Ribeyes and Sirloins. Where were you? Don’t worry if you had some lame excuse and could not attend, another one is being planned for this fall and will include a $ option to pay if you can’t race but want to join us for steaks and beer. How good is that?

PRO George Snook and his team were spot on all day as someone at the skippers meeting requested a course sized for a J22…and we got it and more. With windward legs in the 1 mile range, it was a long day and the fleet was cheering the 1 lapper for the final race (ok, maybe that was just me). With every power boat in Anderson county on the lake for the first really warm weekend, at times the sea state was, well, confused.

First race kicks off at 1:00pm and most of the fleet took off on starboard, then tacked back towards the breeze line coming in, with pressure…The forecast was that ugly 2-4 range and we all know what that means on Hartwell. Usually it means wrist slashing in 93 degrees and 1-2. But no, not today, it built thru the first race and I saw some whitecaps and some great pressure. Scott led wire to wire but not before John and new crew Greg Torissi on Flying Scot Comfortably Numb corrected over the Thistle (with Narissa and Elizabeth on board crewing). Am I proud to have beaten a precocious 5 year old?….Hell yea! Especially with Rock star Narissa calling the shots. John got the bullet, Scott Griffin was second and rapidly improving Eric Seymour with Danielle Bruce crewing was third.

Second race…well, we must have pissed off Narissa because the Thistle put the hammer down and did the horizon job thing and won by over 8 minutes! In case your wondering he finished before I even crossed the line….going downwind. Wow, that was a humbling experience. Rick Fontenot on Annakin was second and Dennis Fisher on his MC Scow was third. Great job Rick! He found a HUGE righty in one of the beats that was something to behold. He came screaming out of the right from what looked like flag island…and held on to second place.

Third race the breeze had dropped and went a little left before the race and made the pin an interesting place to be at the start. Steve and Ronnie had great starts and race was on. With a one lap race, you could not make a mistake and Ronnie Ashmore on Vespula with Terhune Sudderth crewing got the bullet, Eric Seymour and Danielle got 2nd place (the first Flying Scot to finish I might add) and Steve and Margaret captured third. The racing was tight with the first 4 boats finishing within 17 seconds of each other. That’s close.

A couple notes. Eric and Danielle are coming on strong. Eric started racing the Scot only 14 months ago and has made serious progress and will be a threat in the future to all boats. Curt Rubinstein and Marvin are really coming along and figuring out the other Flying Scot and it won’t be long until they start contending every race. Congrats to all 4 of them as they become competitive. It’s great to see and witness.

Oh yea, the steak cookout. Jeremy Marsh cooked some jam up steaks for us and we had a great turnout and good time. We don’t have a date yet for the next steak cookout, but I would not be surprised if we had a bunch of boats and a great turnout for the food. More to come on this.

Next Race is Sunday, May 20th.
