Friday Dinghy Night (2 Aug) Results
Published on 8/3/2019
The Club conducted the second-to-last Friday Dinghy Night last night. Even with the (un avoidable) absence of group leader Eric Seymour, and a forecast of more chance for rain/thunder than wind, 11 skippers made it to the starting area. Race committee set the usual course of a three weather mark array, though the wind was changing faster than the marks could be moved into the appropriate position. Never the less, once the rain
(that rain that started just as boats had exited the harbor)
diminished, the previously-set start/finish line was moved and re set downwind of one of the tetrahedrons (Green, If I remember correctly), racing could commence. Good practice for what was to be repeated later in the evening. Race one started with a relatively square course axis. Race one may have actually started twice, as one of the COMPETIRORS continued to call out start sequence time. (Ugh, the Class flag had already dropped. "Ugh, guys, he's not the PRO) Be that as it may, some boats re started, some boats finally started, and the wind started... going left. RC left station and positioned on of the three tets into a position to match the backing wind. RC, however, could not get back to the leeward mark in time to signal "Changing the Next Leg Of the Course". The second leg was a reach.
Race 2 was also a challenge. When the fleet was ready for the start sequence, one of the originally-set weather marks happened to be nearly in axis with the wind. That mark was also only about 200 yds distant. Hmm, Move the mountain, move Muhamad, or...signal W3. Three laps it is. And although the start line was badly biased, the fleet exercised restraint and did not crash the pin. With the wind still moving around, the race was something of a collection of points of sail.
Race 3-Breeze up to about 7, but gone another 25 degrees left. RC moved one of the marks to a position upwind of and an appropriate distance from the start area. A quick reset of the start line and 3, 2, 1, START. Wow, a square course with a square line. As boats approach the leeward mark, RC
signals "Changing the Next Leg Of the Course"
to one of the, you guessed it, previously marks. One boat isn't sure what that means, so the nearest competitor hollers "Go to the green mark...". The Friday Dinghy Night group is a little easier going than some of the other Club racing.
So...August heat, poor wind forecast, 60% chance of rain/thunder, heavy rain as boats leave the harbor, 11 skippers on the racecourse. Beer and pizza on the deck. Friday Dinghy Night is the, ugh, I forgot the phrase.
