Centerboard Fleet season kicks off

John Kreidler  | Published on 3/11/2019

Congratulations to John Kreidler for claiming all 3 bullets this past Saturday.

A new season has started! The 2019 season kicked off with a fleet meeting to discuss ways to grow the fleet, a possible new course configuration and other good stuff to encourage participation. By 10:30, the fleet meeting had ended and everyone was on the way to the course for a noon start.

With 8 boats participating, a pretty good turnout for a wet 48 degrees and a cool breeze, PRO Chuck Ballew setup a course and got the fleet kicked off for the first race of the season. With the NW breeze of 7-10, the fleet started with Chris Miros on Pog Mo Thoin leading the fleet around the course. The top 3 boats separated from the rest of the fleet with John Kreider (with Greg Torrissi crewing) claiming the bullet, Ronnie Ashmore (with Ron Sanga) getting the silver and Chris (with Alex Bolan) getting the bronze. Even though Chris and Alex got a third, they were consistently fast and made good decisions all day long.

Second race was pretty much the same story with Chris, John and Ronnie separating from the fleet. This race had a rogue righty come in on the first downwind leg that called for an immediate gybe. With this new wind showing, Chuck did a shorten at the leeward mark on the second leg. John got the bullet, Ronnie second and Chris was third.

The breeze settled back to its original course and Chuck started the third race with almost identical results, John claims the bullet, Chris this time gets the silver and Ronnie was third.

By the second/third race, it was wet/misty, cold and at times hard to find the neon orange marks because of the fog. But we had breeze…and hopefully this is a good sign for the upcoming year.

Some new faces this year. Natalie Childs is helming a Flying Scot with Grand Pa Patrick Hopp crewing. I have to say that she did an awesome job and it was very impressive to see her handling the boat and barking orders to Gramps (Trim, trim, trim!….hike, hike, hike!).

Ron Sanga is crewing for Ronnie Ashmore this year. We love to see another cruiser convert from the dark side. Kirk Brutowski was crewing for Eric Seymour and also did well.

Marvin is on a Flying Scot again this year (‘Dances with Bears’) with crew Bruce Ehlert. They are getting a lot better and are becoming a force (whaaa…Marvin a force?) The Fontenots are always fast on their Trimarans and fleet captain Eric Seymour continues to show improvement.

All in all a great start to the year. Next race is Sunday, March 17th with skippers meeting at 11:30 and first gun at 1:00pm. Hope you can make it.
