Congratulations to Dennis Fisher and John Kreidler (2) for their bullets this past Sunday during Centerboard fleet race 2.
The forecast for Sunday was all over the place with E, NE, W, and S as possible wind directions and all were saying light. Like 1-4 light. Yes, wrist slashing conditions. Marc Bailey and crew got us on the water and by 12:45, it was light and Marc was looking like starting a race. It filled in and we had 3 pretty good races with 2-4 out of the SW. Race 3 last leg got light, but all in all pretty good stuff. Thanks Marc and crew!
First race kicks off and Dennis Fisher goes further left then everyone else working up the left side on the first beat and makes out pretty good. At the windward mark, 4 boats were at the mark all at the same time, all on port, all were eyeballing each other trying to figure when to tack. Chris Kafsky (aka ‘Grumpy Kitty’) and daughter Reid on the Highlander along with Ronnie Ashmore on his Buccaneer 18 Vespula (with Patrick Hopp crewing) and John Kreidler on his Flying Scot (with Mitchell Brannon crewing) all tacked. Dennis was closer to the mark and squirted away, but not before John Kreidler tried to squeeze into what was a rapidly disappearing hole between Dennis and the mark…so he had a choice, hit the MC Scow or the mark, he chose the mark and did his 360. Fisher was off and killing it the rest of the race and was faster and higher than everyone, a pretty good combination. He won wire to wire, John was second and Chris Kafsky was third.
Second race had Dennis Fisher and Ronnie Ashmore fighting for the pin and both were just a few seconds early and called OCS. Chris Kafsky was fast and pulled away in the WL2 race, only to get the Lead No. 2 slap by John and Mitchell on Comfortably Numb. Dennis Fisher recovered from the OCS and finished second with Grumpy Kitty (aka. Chris Kafsky) finishing third. The top 3 boats were separated by 9 seconds, some great racing.
Third race had Mitchell Brannon on the helm of Comfortably with John Kreidler crewing. Mitchell won the pin, went to the first shift, tacked and led at every mark getting the horn and the bullet. Great going Mitchell! Ronnie Ashmore was second and Chris Kafsky was third.
All in all some great light air racing. It was light, but it was also fairly consistent and made for some fun chess match racing. With the Bass Masters going on and boats screaming to the Green pond area for check in (along with a helicopter), it was pretty crazy. But you know, a Bass boat going 45 mph does not leave much of a wake, so have at it Bill Dance. We had a great turnout with 9 boats on the water with everyone getting the rust knocked off and some tight racing.
Alex Bolan, the WCSC new Sailing Chairman was out on the water taking videos and lots of pictures. Check them out here (I don’t have the link yet and will send out another email when I do).
Next race is April 21st. Contact Fleet Captain Eric Seymour if you have any questions about the fleet or if would like to join us. We always have boats available and competent skippers that can help you get started.
