The second of three planned Frostbite Races was held last Saturday, 17 Jan. Riding on the wake of the very successful Jan.1 race (with a possible-record eleven entrants), and the promise of Spring-like conditions, the turnout was again very large. Once again, eleven boats made it to the starting area. With the skipper's meeting being somewhat, well, ...like a casual-race skipper's meeting, we weren't sure exactly who and how many would raise sail. The fleet trickled out of the harbor in warm, but very light conditions. And what a fleet! Some were regular racers like Paul Harder and Chris Miros. Some were from the day sailor/cruiser ranks like Curt Rubenstein and Ron Sanga, Henry Edwards, and Keith Schrec (I'm not really racing). Did I mention Byron Hicks racing a Sunfish? And at least one (I believe) first timer, Ben and Pat Gibson on the San Juan 21.  It seems that the distance course might be attracting some people who previously chose not to race.
Some motored and some sailed to the S 15 start area. With the 12:00 start time possibly a little unrealistic, PRO Derek signaled postponement. A glance towards the Club revealed more sails approaching. The breeze not showing a strong sign of building, Derek suggested that the if the fleet had to drift, it might as well drift along the race course. After posting the "B" placard (rounding mark is S 6), the sequence was started. Unlike the Jan 1 start, Frostbite Race # 2 started as a broad reach, and without much drama, as boat speeds were generally under two knots. Fais Do Do and Cowardly Lion pulled ahead early. They also caught the new breeze first when it came from the SSW. The reach became a beat, and the tri had to furl the big reaching sail and go to main and jib. (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.)The new breeze found the remainder of the fleet, and everyone had power. Cowardly Lion reached the rounding mark (S 6) first and got the spin up. Fais Do Do didn't have spin crew onboard and had to sail main and jib downwind. The Harder boys (Paul and sons, and soon-to-be daughter in law) weren't far behind! (Are you sure that rating's correct?) The boats were strung out on the course now, but all having a great sail. It seemed that the RC boat might have drug from S 15 towards S 17,but the finish line was in place. Again, Cowardly Lion got line honors, but did not sail to her ratings, and corrected out to fourth. Guess who took first? (trick question, Paul did)
There was some talk of a boat missing the navigation, and some mention of a boat retiring for sailing the course incorrectly. I'm not sure, as even with the success of fielding a large Frostbite fleet, we have not managed to field a post race gathering to tell the day's stories. Maybe after Frostbite Race # 3 we will share a few cocktails.
Oh. it's been rumored that if Frostbite # 3 goes as well as the first two, the 20015 series might be re named the '2015 Hey Frost, "Bite Me!" Series'.

                                          Frostbite #3 Canceled

The third, and last, scheduled Frostbite Race that was scheduled for Feb 21 has been canceled. Again, we had planned to use the 'Good Dam Distance Race' format for the course.
